Mourning jewels are incredible tokens of love and sentiment that have come down to us through time. This is the perfect opportunity to add a genuinely unique jewel to your collection.

This locket brooch is an especially fine mourning jewel that dates to the early days of Queen Victorian's reign. Black onyx has been cut into a concave oval with beveled edges. An exuberant six-pointed star of engraved 18k gold is applied to the center of the onyx, with a fat and funky old mine cut diamond glittering at its heart. This cushion cut diamond is 0.35ct of wonderful, warm sparkle. The gem-set onyx sits in a rich 18k gold locket with a border of ornate gold wire work. The locket's bubble back is engraved with the legend "In Memory of Nugent Hunt". A pendant bale and classic Victorian C-clasp complete the piece and make it versatile to wear. A beautiful and luxurious reminder of Mr. Hunt, who was clearly well loved, well monied, or (hopefully) both. Circa 1840.

The Victorians held great meaning in symbolism and that is reflected in the choice of colors and gems used in mourning pieces. The black onyx in this brooch represents the deep love and grief felt for the deceased. What an extraordinary and beautiful piece of history.

Details.....This piece measures 1.71" by 1.26". It weighs 18.4 grams. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique pieces; we consider it part of the charm.
