Gossamer Plique-à-jour Enamel Butterfly Brooch

What better application for exquisite plique-à-jour enamel than gossamer butterfly wings? This Art Nouveau butterfly brooch is an enchantress with delicate swirling lines and translucent blue wings. Crafted in silver, a lovely complement to the cool blue enamel. Her body and the edges of her wings are picked out in sparkling white paste gems. She fastens with a hinged pin and c-clasp. This brooch is simply delightful; when she alights upon you, it is a magical sensation. Circa 1900.

Plique-à-jour (French for "letting in daylight") is a technically challenging enameling technique where enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing in the final product. Light shines through the transparent enamel, creating a stained-glass effect.
