A whimsical shakudo frog fishes off the edge of a lily pad, the frog is wearing a turtle shell on his back and a lily pad as a hat. His froggy countenance peers from under a lily pad hat as he sits with his rod and creel, peeking over his shoulder in armor and a disguise he embodies the spirit of a warrior and the art of a deep thinker. The frog is a beautifully executed example of 19th-century Japanese shakudo. The shakudo technique involves inlaying gold, copper, and silver into a darkened copper base and was originally used to decorate Katana sword fittings. The 19th century Japanese turtle was applied to his lily pad of sculpted and engraved 14k gold in the 1940s; the juxtaposition of two centuries has created a wearable piece of art..
