19th Century French Gun Metal Locket

This enchanting French locket is crafted of gunmetal, a wonderful dark grey, matte metal popular in the mid 1800s. The round locket is engraved, front and back, with a pattern of X's on a field of pinstripes, quite a smart design. The piece swivels open to reveal single frame lined in mauve. Grey and mauve colors are indicators of half mourning, adding deeper significance to this moody jewel. A complimentary gun metal rolo chain completes the look. The locket's interior is marked "Breveté SGDG," a common French patent designation that stood for "Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement" (Patented without Government Guarantee). Circa 1860.

Details.....The chain is 18" long, the locket measures 1.15" in diameter. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique pieces, we consider it part of the charm.
