This charming antique cowrie shell necklace is a lovely example of the naturalistic movement. The Edwardians had a passion for natural history and loved to incorporate elements from nature into their jewelry. In this piece, creamy white cowrie shells are strung on a delicate sterling silver chain. The necklace is finished with a pretty silver flower clasp. Circa 1910.
Cowrie shells have been used as currency in several parts of the world, and have been used very extensively in jewelry and for other decorative and ceremonial purposes. In some cultures the cowrie shell is viewed as a symbol of womanhood, fertility, birth and wealth.
Details.....The necklace measures 20" long, the shells measure, on average, 14.5mm by 12mm. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it a part of their charm.
