Modernist Silver Blade Necklace by Antonio Pineda

This fascinating necklace is a bold study in contrasts, from important Mexican Modernist Antonio Pineda. Fierce yet luxurious, this is a collectible statement piece. A large pendant resembling an axe blade or rocker knife is wrought from 970-grade silver. The pendant's edge is beveled, and the blade is hammered; it looks like a formidable yet beautiful weapon. The eye of the axe serves as its bale. The pendant hangs on a thong of lush silk velvet in a delicate mauve hue; the thong finishes with spade-shaped silver terminals. It fastens lariat-style, tying around the neck. The back of this pendant is marked "970 Hecho en Mexico," "YY 604," it bears the maker's mark Pineda began using in 1953 and Mexico's Eagle 1 mark. This work of art will elevate any outfit you wear it with. Circa 1950.

This piece dates from a high point in silver jewelry design in Mexico. In the 1940s, the Mexican city of Taxco drew jewelry artists from all over the world. The main attraction for designers and studio jewelers was the locally mined materials. Silver and semi-precious gems were abundant and affordable.

Antonio Pineda was born in Taxco in 1919. He apprenticed with William Spratling before opening his workshop in 1939. Pineda's Modernist style was bold and architectural. His jewelry is amongst the most technically refined ever made in Taxco.
