Antique Chinese jewelry is incomparably lovely, with the most marvelous craftsmanship. Here, an exquisite Chinese nail guard has been converted into a brooch. The nail guard's silver gilt filigree is set with a vertical row of turquoise and coral teardrops. Blossoms are enameled in shades of blue, violet and plum. A rollover clasp has been added, this striking piece is a nice size and weight for mid-weight fabrics. Circa 1920.

Nail guards are believed to have originated in the Ming Dynasty, but they became a cultural phenomenon during the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). The length and decoration of a high ranking woman's fingernails signified her aristocratic rank. Nail guards were typically worn on the pinky and ring fingers of each hand, protecting fingernails that might reach up to 6 inches long.

Details.....The brooch measures 3.31" long, it tapers from .65" to .15" wide. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on your vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of the charm.
