Beautifully made Sottish pebble brooch shaped as an antique powder flask. Vibrant rectangles of banded agate, bloodstone and jasper are flush-set in sterling silver, creating the clever effect of a three-dimensional flask. The silver is covered in exquisite engraving. The substantial brooch curves to accommodate the heavy fabric of a tartan. A Victorian hinged pin and c-clasp complete the piece. This all original brooch bears a British Registered Design Mark, or “Kitemark,” that tells us its design was registered on July 8, 1865.
Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.
Details.....The brooch measures 2.45" by 1.05". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
