The Victorian Language of Flowers motif is depicted in this exquisite pietra dura mosaic brooch. Pietra dura means "hard stone," this design was created by inlaying pieces of colored hard stone into a black stone background. Delicate white carnations are accented with a single forget-me-not flower; in Victorian floriography, white carnations paired with forget-me-nots convey sentiments of enduring, faithful love, affection, and longing. This charming brooch fastens with a secure rollover clasp. Circa 1900.
