Gorgeous, glossy blue banded agate is cunningly used in this moody Scottish pebble bow brooch. The striated agate is cut, polished and set to create a three-dimensional ribbon-like effect. The stones are set in a sterling silver frame, with a closed back and Victorian hinged pin and c-clasp. Did the agate in this all original brooch hail from the legendary lost Blue Hole agate source? Perhaps.... Circa 1860-70.

Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.

Details.....The brooch measures 1.92" by 1.51". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
