A lovely Scottish penannular cloak pin. The brooch is an open ring with ornate terminals and a long pin that slides around the ring. The engraved silver ring ends in elaborate engraved and blue-enameled terminals. The long silver pin is engraved and enameled, with an enameled head that resembles a thistle. Engraved patterns adorn the backside of the brooch, the foliate engraving on this brooch is beautiful. This brooch will look amazing worn on a heavy tartan or shawl. Circa 1890.
Penannular brooches, also known as the Celtic brooches, are types of brooch most closely associated with the beginning of the Early Medieval period in the British Isles. A penannular brooch features a long pin attached by its head to an open ring with terminals; the pin can move freely around the ring as far as the terminals will allow.
