Tasteful Scottish pebble flower brooch with vibrant stone petals. The brooch is softly scalloped, shaped like a simplified flower. Petals of glossy polished jasper and banded agate are set flush within a sterling silver frame. A silver ring bands an open hole at its center. The closed sterling silver back is finished with a Victorian c-clasp, the extra long pin indicates this is an earlier piece. Circa 1850.
Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.
Details.....The brooch measures 1.99" in diameter. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
