This dramatic Modernist brooch is from the important Taxco artist Alfredo Villasana. A convex sterling silver parallelogram shines with niello enamel. Two embracing silver arcs nestle together atop the brooch, applied in three dimensions. So simple and so powerful, like all great Modernist designs. The back of this statement brooch is marked "Villasana," "Sterlind 925," "Taxco AV Hecho en Mexico," and with the Eagle 3 mark for sterling silver. Why "Sterlind?" We don't know, but the apparent typo is a documented element of Villasana's signature. Circa 1950.
Alfredo Villasana was a prominent Taxco artist, his work is highly prized and increasingly collectible. Villasana managed both William Spratling and Hector Aguilar's shops in the 1930s before branching off to open his own shop in the 1950s. He is known for his superb repoussé work.
Details.....This brooch measures 2.16" by 1.34", and it weighs 0.60 oz. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of the charm.
