A Scottish pebble butterfly brooch spreads its lovely wings to a generous span of over three inches. Agate and jasper, in subtle tones of caramel, cream and toffee, are cut and polished to form the whimsical insect's body and wings. Her head is bright green bloodstone. Silver wire forms her long, curling antennae. The stones are set in a sterling silver frame that gently curves to accommodate heavy fabrics. A hinged pin and c-clasp complete this all original brooch. Circa 1860-70.
Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.
Details.....The brooch measures 3.04" by 1.39". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
