April Birthstone Jewelry - The Diamond

Evidence supports that diamonds were collected and traded in India as early as the fourth century BC. India was the original source of the world’s diamonds until supply declined in the 1700s. Diamonds are mined in many parts of the world today.

The structure of a diamond -- which can only be cut with another diamond -- makes it 58 times harder than anything in nature.

History

According to the Romans, cupid’s arrows had diamond tips.

During the Middle Ages it was believed that diamonds held healing powers. It was thought that harmful toxins could be drawn from the body if the wearer heated the crystal before wearing it to bed.

Ancient civilizations believed that diamonds were lightning made real on earth.

Color

Available in several colors including yellow, pink, blue, red and green, diamonds saturated with color are often highest in value.

Symbolism

The gem has always represented eternal and lasting love. Diamonds are well known for their popular use in engagement rings.

Known as the love stone, diamonds have been believed to enhance the longevity and honesty of relationships.

These glittering gossamer drop earrings marry Mid 19th Century romance with modern ingenuity. The body of the earrings feature a garland of rose cut diamonds set in delicately wrought silver, like precious dew drops. The silver retains the patina of ages, an effect that cannot be created through any process but time. Diamond set dangles twinkle sweetly from the base of the earrings. The original tops of these beauties have been lost, so we've had recycled 14k yellow gold ear wires hand drawn especially for them. The earrings move gracefully with two points of articulation, and their size is an ideal proportion for modern wear. What a joy to return such enchanting jewels to wearability.

All of our metals come from a certified green refinery and our stones are drawn from our collection of vintage gems. Our jewelry making process takes time as each piece is made by hand using age old techniques. All of the items from this line of jewels is crafted in our in house studio.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES

-Paula Bixel - Proprietor

"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
