December Birthstone Jewelry - Turquoise & Zircon

Blue is the color for December birthstones, and all four gemstones for the month represent a different hue of this color: turquoise and zircon. When you are shopping for a December birthstone for yourself or a loved one, you have many options to choose from.

Turquoise

History

The December birthstone turquoise is one of the most widely used stones in history, dating back to mines in Egypt from 2000 BC. Pharaohs and other ancient Egyptian rulers adorned themselves with turquoise. Other ancient cultures believed turquoise was a symbol of abundance and success. An important part of Native American culture, engraved turquoise stones served as protection for tribes, ensured a smooth transition to heaven after death, and were used by tribal healers to cure illnesses.

Color

A semi-translucent to opaque gem, turquoise ranges in color from blue to green. The most valued stones are typically sky blue.

Symbolism

The gift of a turquoise ring in European tradition means “forget me not.” Others believe turquoise symbolizes kinship, peace, and good fortune.

Zircon

History

The second birthstone for December, zircon, is the oldest mineral on earth with samples found in Australia that date to over 4.4 billion years old. Zircon has been treasured since the Middle Ages when it was associated with promoting honor and wisdom, aiding sleep, and bringing prosperity. Zircon has long been believed by many cultures to have healing properties and the ability to help facilitate the recovery process after illness.

Color

Zircon’s natural color varies between colorless, golden yellow, brown, red, green, and blue. Blue is the most popular color of zircon, which was highly favored during the Victorian era.

Symbolism

Zircon represents trustworthiness, respect, and virtuousness.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES

-Paula Bixel - Proprietor

"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
