The word means “intoxicated,” a reference to the belief held by the ancient Greeks that the stone protected its wearer from drunkenness.
February Birthstone Jewelry - The Amethyst
History
Amethyst is also the zodiac stone for Pisces and a celebratory symbol for the 6th and 17th years of marriage.
For many years, amethyst was considered one of the most precious stones -- held in the same regard as the diamond -- favored by royalty or the clergy to symbolize the deity of Christ. The gemstone has since been enjoyed by more than just the elite since the discovery of an abundant supply in South America in the 19th century.
It is believed that St. Valentine, the patron of romantic love, wore an amethyst ring carved with the image of Cupid.
Color
Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and ranges in color from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple that can have hints of blue or red depending on the light.
Symbolism
Considered a symbol of royalty in the Middle Ages, amethyst was used to decorate English regalia.
The stone symbolizes protection, and it is believed to help purify the mind of negative stress and anxiety.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES
-Paula Bixel - Proprietor
"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
