The word “garnet” is derived from the word garanatus - ” meaning “seedlike” - because it resembles a pomegranate seed.
January Birthstones - The Garnet
History
References to the stone go back to 3100 BC when the Egyptians used garnet as inlays in carvings and jewelry.
Garnet was very popular with the Romans in the third and fourth century, often used as signet rings. During the Middle Ages, nobility favored garnets.
Today garnets are used in a range of jewelry pieces and styles.
Color
Most people associate garnet with a beautiful deep red color, though garnet colors range a rich palette of oranges, yellows, greens, purples, pinks, browns and though rare, even some blues.
Symbolism
The stone symbolizes good health, prosperity and peace.
It is believed to keep the wearer safe during travel. The gemstone has also been used as protection by warriors going into battle and ancient healers who placed garnets in wounds, citing its powerful healing abilities.
In addition to being the birthstone for January, garnet is the zodiac stone for Aquarius and the second anniversary stone.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES
-Paula Bixel - Proprietor
"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
