July Birthstone Jewelry - The Ruby

The ruby is the second hardest natural gemstone, with only diamonds being harder. In addition to being the July birthstone, rubies are traditional gifts for 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries.

History

The ruby was regarded in ancient India as “king of precious stones” for its beauty, rarity, and seemingly mystical powers. In other cultures, it was believed the birthstone for July could protect its wearer from evil, predict misfortune or danger, or could even cure inflammatory diseases. It has also been associated with ancient beliefs of amplified energy, courage, and success in wealth, battle and love.

Color

Ruby, the red variety of the mineral corundum, gets it color from the element chromium. Rubies are known for their red color, which can range from pale rose red to deep blood red.

Symbolism

Derived from the Latin word for red, rubies symbolize love, energy, success, and passion.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES

-Paula Bixel - Proprietor

"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
