March Birthstone Jewelry - The Aquamarine

The name is derived from two words meaning “water” and “of the sea.” It has been said that the stone gives the wearer protection against foes in battle, making him or her unconquerable.

History

Wearing aquamarine was believed to be an antidote to poisoning during the Middle Ages. The gem was in popular demand for that reason, as death by poison was widely common among royalty at that time.

Also during the Middle Ages, aquamarine was considered a superior stone for fortune telling when cut as a crystal ball.

Romans believed aquamarine could reconcile differences between friends when a frog was carved into a piece of the jewelry.

Color

Bloodstone, a dark green gemstone speckled with red spots, is another birthstone associated with March.

A member of the beryl family, aquamarine is blue to blue-green in color. Today, the more blue the color the higher the value of the gem.

Symbolism

In addition to being the birthstone for March, aquamarine is the gem of the 19th wedding anniversary.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES

-Paula Bixel - Proprietor

"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
