November Birthstone Jewelry - Citrine & Topaz

For much of history it was believed that all yellow gemstones were topaz, and all topaz was yellow. The November birthstone and traditional gift for a 4th wedding anniversary is actually available in a variety of colors, and may not even be related to the gemstones that originally used its name. Citrine, November’s second birthstone, takes its name from citrus for its lemon-inspired shades of yellow. The pale yellow color of the gem has caused it to often be mistaken for topaz throughout history.

Citrine

History

Yellow gemstones were referred to as citrine as early as the 1300’s, when it was first recorded in English. Ancient cultures believed citrine could manifest prosperity, calm tempers, and soothe anger. When mineralogists discovered that amethyst and smoky quartz could be heat treated to produce yellow shades of citrine in the mid-18th century, the gem got a boost of popularity as affordable varieties of the gemstone became available on the market. It remains one of the most popular yellow gemstones today.

Color

Through the ages, citrine has often been confused with topaz because of its pale, yellow coloring. Its color can range from a common pale, yellow to a less common deep, reddish orange. The finest color is a saturated yellow to reddish orange with no brown tones.

Symbolism

Evoking images of sunshine, warmth, and illumination, citrine symbolizes positivity, vitality, and romantic passion.

Topaz

History

The history of topaz goes back thousands of years, to when ancient Egyptians believed that the Sun God was responsible for the golden hue of yellow topaz. During the Renaissance in Europe, people associated topaz with the ability to quell anger and break spells. Other ancient cultures deemed topaz sacred, believing that it could bring longevity and wisdom to the wearer’s life. Texas adopted blue topaz as its official state gemstone in 1969.

Color

Long associated with the color yellow, topaz is also available in many colors, including rare pinks and reds. The traditional November birthstone is orange topaz.

Symbolism

Topaz symbolizes empathy and serenity, and is a promoter of harmony.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES

-Paula Bixel - Proprietor

"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
