October Birthstone Jewelry - The Opal

One of the most popular gems, a single opal stone can flash every color of the rainbow with an intensity and quality that rivals a diamond. Softer than most gemstones, the October birthstone require special care and should not be worn during activities when impact might occur.

History

Ancient legends have credited opal with supernatural powers. Some ancient cultures believed opals gave their owners the gift of prophecy and protection from disease. The gem has long been regarded as one of the luckiest because it can exhibit all colors. In addition to being the October birthstone, opal is the national gemstone of Australia, where 90 percent of the world’s precious opal have been discovered since the 1800s.

Color

“Precious opal” exhibits a phenomenon called play of color, meaning it flashes iridescent colors across the spectrum when it is viewed from different angles. This variety is very rare. Most opals are considered “common opals” which are attractive and desirable, but simply lack the play of color effect to be considered “precious.” A “fire opal” describes a bright opal that has a fire-like background of red, yellow or orange.

Symbolism

Opals have long symbolized hope, truth, and purity.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES

-Paula Bixel - Proprietor

"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
