A variety of the mineral corundum, sapphires are typically blue but also come in a range of every color in the rainbow except red. Sapphires get their beautiful colors from traces of iron, chromium, titanium and other elements. When “sapphire” is used on its own it usually refers to a blue sapphire.
September Birthstone Jewelry - The Sapphire
History
For centuries, sapphire has adorned the robes of clergy members and royalty. The association with royalty and romance was reinforced in 1981, when Lady Diana Spencer received a sapphire engagement ring from Prince Charles. Ancient cultures believed that sapphires protected their owners from envy and harm.
Color
Sapphires come in every color of the rainbow. Color saturation and tone are the most important elements when valuing a sapphire. Highly valued sapphires range from velvety blue to violet blue, in medium to dark tones.
Symbolism
Sapphire symbolizes sincerity, truth, faithfulness, and nobility.

MOURNING IN THE VICTORIAN PERIOD
INSTALLMENT 1 OF THE IDENTIFLY SERIES
-Paula Bixel - Proprietor
"Wearing jewelry in remembrance of our beloved dead is a tradition that originated in the 16th century, but the fashion for mourning jewelry reached its height during the reign of Queen Victoria. Victorian mourning jewelry, particularly those pieces dating to the earlier part of this era, are of special interest to lovers of antique jewelry due to its uniquely personal nature; few other styles of jewelry allow such an intimate glimpse into the past."
