This is such a lovely piece. The decorative panel of open work gold holds a lovely carved scarab in the greenish color often found in antique scarabs. The gold work on this piece is sublime, Papyrus leaves decorate the ends while elaborate open curled gold details fill the spaces leading to the scarab, the sides have curved grooved gold detail and the frames sides are engraved with pyramids. Every part of this gorgeous Egyptian revival piece is detailed, even the piece itself is shaped like an Egyptian cartouche. Marked 14k on the back, the clasp is integral, the twisted rope chain is also 14k gold.
The scarabs are often older than the jewels they are set in as it has been the custom for thousands of years to throw scarabs into the river Nile. The scarab has special meaning in Egyptian lore, it was believed that the beetle rolled the sun across the sky. Each faience scarab in this necklace has hieroglyphs on the back. Faience has been made for thousands of years, using quartz, sand crystals and other minerals ground together and crafted into its chosen form it was then heated to harden it, it was sometimes glazed as well.
Details.....The necklace measures 23" long. The scarab set clasp measures 2.04" x .76". In Excellent vintage condition.
