Keep your powder dry in this superb French Art Deco compact. The sophisticated compact is a slim silver rectangle, enameled in glossy black and set with a decorative plaque of celluloid. The celluloid is a marbled greenish-gray color, molded into a pattern of raised squares. The hinged box opens to reveal a mirror and a compartment for holding face powder. Powder may be secured under a removable screened panel. This compact is in marvelously clean and usable condition, with the original applicator. The screened panel is easily lifted; insert powder, replace the panel and you are set, though replacing the applicator may be wise. The mirror frame is marked "Made in France" and "Henri Bendel". Just imagine...nearly one hundred years ago a chic Jazz Age fashionista, a real lady, not a flibbertigibbet flapper, powdered her elegant nose with this incredible compact. Circa 1920.
Henri Bendel, established in 1895, was a women's luxury accessories store. Its flagship New York City store was located at 712 Fifth Avenue, one of the first retail establishments on that historic street. Henri Bendel was the first retailer to have its own fragrance, to offer in-store makeovers, and to stage its own fashion show.
Details.....The compact measures 3.39" by 2.4" and 0.70" thick. In Very Good Vintage Condition, with a tiny loss to the enamel at one corner. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
