Fantastic onyx intaglio of a Roman soldier wearing the Dacian Draco ensign upon his helmet. The carved tabular stone sits in a heavy 14k yellow gold ring, with a smooth bezel, sculpted shoulders, and a wide band. This ring has a lovely bloom, that attractive patina found on old gold. Bold in size, this noble fellow makes a powerful impression. Circa 1920.

The Dacian Draco was the standard ensign of troops of the ancient Dacian people. The Dacian Draco was a wind instrument in the form of a dragon with open wolf-like jaws containing several metal tongues. The Draco was held above the head of a soldier, where it filled with air and made a shrill sound. Scholars believe that the Draco was adopted by the Roman army following their conquest of the Dacians after 106 CE.
