Petite Silver & Turquoise Squash Blossom Necklace
A petite Navajo squash blossom necklace with traditional squash blossom links flanking a pretty Naja pendant. The Naja is embellished with five turquoise stones, framed in rope work, beading, and applied leaves. The vibrant turquoise ranges in color from sky blue to minty green. Two-part construction beads, turquoise-set links, and the Naja are all strung on a woven silver chain. The piece finishes with a traditional hook and eye clasp. This is a lightweight version of the typically imposing necklace style. Circa 1970.
The Naja symbol is believed to have originated in the Middle East. The Moors brought horse-shoe-shaped jewelry with them into Spain as a ward against the evil eye. The Spanish conquistadors introduced the symbol to the Diné (Navajo), who integrated it into the dramatic squash blossom design.
