An Art Nouveau era lorgnette with a weird and wonderful design. The silver gilt lorgnette case is shaped as a beautiful crowned woman with wild, flowing hair. The handle depicts two strange creatures with wide open mouths. The spectacles spring out from the ornate case, then unfold to reveal glass lenses in elegant wire frames. The lenses snap securely back into the case. Obviously, this lorgnette is reserved for examining only the most arcane of tomes. Circa 1890.
A lorgnette is a pair of spectacles that is held up to the eyes using a handle rather than fitting over the ears or nose.
