Berlin iron jewelry was created in Germany in the early 19th Century. German citizens donated their gold to fund the war against Napoleon Bonaparte I; in return, they received iron inscribed with the phrase, "I gave gold for iron." Patriots wore these jewels proudly and inspired a wider fashion trend.
