This early Victorian brooch is so elegant. A plait of blonde and brunette hair is preserved under a bevel edged glass. The glass is framed in a gold bezel, surrounded by glossy black enamel. The gold bezel is richly engraved with a geometric pattern. The 12k gold and black enamel create a dramatic contrast. The initials "MJT" are exquisitely hand engraved on the back. The brooch is secured with a classic Victorian C-clasp. Circa 1850.
The Victorians held great meaning in symbolism and that is reflected in the use of colors and gems in mourning pieces. The black enamel on this brooch represents the deep love and grief felt for the deceased. What an extraordinary and beautiful piece of history.
Details.....The brooch measures 1.32" by 1.01". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique pieces, we consider it part of the charm.
