Blue Butterfly in Engraved Gold Locket

A Blue Morpho butterfly is preserved under glass within this exquisitely engraved locket. The front of the 14k gold locket is open; protective glass sits in a frame richly engraved with a garland of flowers. The butterfly wings are real, but the insect's tiny body appears to be modeled, perhaps from clay. Her delicate wings are wonderful, with their iridescent color and velvety texture. The locket's plain gold back is highly polished. A jump ring has been added to the small, integrated bale for ease of wear. A delightful marriage of natural beauty and human artistry. Circa 1870.
