Bright Yellow Bakelite Star Button with Compass

A bright yellow Bakelite button in the shape of a five-pointed star, set with a copper-colored compass. The compass reads, along with its directional points, "Japan." It's quite large for a button, fair warning, and it's awfully collective. Circa 1940.

Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. Developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, 1909. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and substantial, high-end feel. The wide variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.
