During the 1700's watches were very bulky and their interiors highly decorated using elaborate pieces in the watch works referred to as cocks. By the 1800's watches became slimmer, more refined and much more accurate and the earlier elaborate insides fell out of favour. So of course the "old fashioned" watches were taken apart, the gold reused and the beautifully elaborate hand cut and engraved watch cocks made into jewelry.
In my personal collection for decades were a pair of buckles made from 2 pairs of very fine watch cocks, they had been curved for their use as shoe buckles and that very curve makes them perfect earrings. We added recycled vintage diamonds to the center and recycled 14k yellow gold earwires, the curve and sit perfectly on the earlobe. There are only 2 pair. Each 18th century jewelers brass watch cock is engraved in amazing detail and has what looks like an ancient God at the bottom. The closer you look the more fantastic the details.
Details.....The earrings measure .95" x .86" They are in amazing condition for 250 Years old.
