Double-Strand Turquoise Heishi Beads with Jacla

A gorgeous double-strand turquoise heishi bead necklace is adorned with a Jacla. Two strands of graduated sky-blue turquoise heishi beads are joined in the front by turquoise nuggets and crimson coral beads. The jacla hangs from the turquoise nuggets; its heishi beads perfectly match the necklace, and the loops bear the traditional white shell beads. This wonderful necklace is finished with rocker-stamped sterling silver terminals and fastens with a hook and eye clasp. Circa 1970.

A jacla (Navajo for "ear string.") is two loops of turquoise and shell heishi beads that are strung individually and then tied together so they may be suspended from a bead necklace, like a tassel. Originally in the 19th Century, the loops were worn separately as earrings. The earrings were tied to necklaces for storage purposes, and over time jaclas evolved into pendants. The white beads at the bottom of the loops represent corn kernels.

Heishi (meaning "shell") beads are small disc or tube-shaped beads made of shells or stones, traditionally cut, polished, and drilled by hand. They originate with the Kewa Pueblo, previously known as the Pueblo of Santo Domingo, people of New Mexico.

Details.....The necklace is 27" long. The turquoise beads graduate from 3.5mm to 8.1mm, and the shell beads measure 10.5mm in diameter. The jaclas are 6" long. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on your vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of the charm.
