An unusual amulet made of rich blue glazed Faience depicting the Goddess Hathor. The ancient faience is set on a swivel with a decorative top featuring dual images of the Sphinx back to back in 14k yellow gold. Hathor, the cow-headed Goddess, was referred to as the lady of the west, welcoming the setting sun each night. She was also the Goddess of motherhood and happiness. Egyptian motifs in jewelry were very popular in the 1800s and again in the 1920s when the tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered. The bale and the chain have been added so this piece could be worn as a pendant; it was likely originally worn as a decorative fob on a watch chain. The Sphinx frame dates from the early 1900s, and the amulet is ancient.
Faience has been made for thousands of years, using quartz, sand crystals, and other minerals ground together, crafted into its chosen form, and then heated to harden it. Often glazed, this one was made to resemble turquoise.
Details.....The chain measures 18" long. The pendant measures 1.04" x .78", including the frame. In Excellent vintage condition, with a few small chips to the edges. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels; we consider it part of the charm.
