Extraordinary Edwardian/Deco Diamond Ring
This fascinating ring walks the line between very late Edwardian and very early Art Deco. The lovely diamond ring is constructed in 18k white gold, a Deco era material, with elegant Edwardian design elements. The slightly domed ring has wonderful open work, pierced out with delicate engraved and milgrain detail. A central white and sparkly old European cut diamond is bead set in an octagonal box. Six old mine cut accent diamonds are set in an arrow head design; the accent stones are super chunky cuts with wonderful squarish open culets. The ring's tapered shoulders are engraved with beaded detail and the gallery has a many-petaled flower design. Such a beautiful ring, rich with extraordinary details. Circa 1918-1922.
During the Edwardian era, fine white metal jewelry was crafted in platinum. During World War I North America deemed platinum a "vital war material," therefore forbidden for use in jewelry. White gold, while originally patented in 1915, was rarely used before Belais Company patented, trademarked, branded and heavily advertised 18k white gold in 1920. This ring is an interesting example of very early white gold usage.
