This piece is as rare as it is lovely. The center is set with a large Garnet cabochon called a "carbuncle" surrounded by rose cut diamonds and pearls. Each prong on the garnet is set with a diamond, all the details on this piece make it a fine example of mid 19th-century jewelry. Suspended from the bottom is a heart-shaped garnet drop also surrounded by pearls. What makes this piece so unusual is that it still has the pieces that truly make it a convertible piece. The pin can be removed and the c clasp folded don, and a bale swiveled up to make the brooch a pendant. Usually, these pieces have lost their removable parts by the time their 160 years old.
