Rare Beauty. This early 1800's high karat gold pendant is set with a sparkling pear shaped rose cut diamond at its center. There are 9 diamonds in the setting around the central stone. All of the diamonds are set in early versions of a tulip design, the diamonds themselves being in cutback collet settings. The 9 small diamonds are closed back, the larger center stone has had the back opened, not uncommon in the early 20th century. There are traces of old repairs on the back.
Details.....The pendant tests for 18 to 22k gold, the chain is new and 18k gold, pendants were worn on ribbons or beads when this piece was made. The chain is 16" long. The pendant measures 25.8mm x 17.6mm, the pear shaped rose cut diamond measures 8.1mm x 5.9mm. It is nearly impossible to calculate the weight of a rose cut diamond without unsetting it and weighing it.
