Antique Hippocampus Pendant in Gold

This fierce hippocampus pendant is cast in 14k yellow gold. The creature is beautifully rendered, with very nice detail and an attractive weight. The antique pendant dates to the late Victorian era and the chain is a modern replacement, made of recycled 14k gold. A great piece to wear layered or on its own. Circa 1890.

Hippocampoi are the fish-tailed horses of the sea. The ancient Greeks depicted them as composite creatures with the head and fore-parts of a horse and the serpentine-tail of a fish. They were believed to be the adult-form of sea-horses, and Poseidon's chariot was drawn over the surface of the sea by a team of these creatures.
