Beautifully faceted jet beads, hand knotted on black silk. The quintessential Victorian accessory. Whether worn for fashion or for mourning, jet was one of the most popular materials used for jewelry during Queen Victoria's reign. Circa 1870.
Jet is petrified lignite coal, mined predominately in Whitby, England. Its natural black color made it an indispensable material for use in mourning jewelry.
Details.....The necklace is 50" long and the beads measure 13.4mm. In Very Good Antique Condition. Small imperfections and wear are to be expected, we consider it to be a part of their charm.
