The Alaskan gold rushes brought exotic materials like petrified mastodon tusk, walrus tusk, and teeth into popular usage in fine jewelry. This strand of beads has been carved from petrified mastodon tusk, a marvelous example of the fashion. The graduated beads are hand knotted on silk. Circa 1920.
