A monumental Turkmen necklace featuring a dramatic pendant suspended on a strand of linked Arabic coins. The pendant is huge, a silver disc pierced and engraved with geometric designs and set with five red glass gems in an "X" that spans the disc and creates a quincunx shape. Fire-gilded diamonds accent the pattern. Two red glass gems in silver settings dangle from the bottom of the pendant, engraved with a moon and star motif. This is a fabulous piece, but take note of the measurements ... it is a lot bigger than it looks. Circa 1900.
Turkmen are a Turkic ethnic group native to Central Asia, living mainly in Turkmenistan and some regions of Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and the North Caucasus. Turkmen jewels are typically made of silver and sometimes fire-gilded for added color effect and value, with semi-precious stones or glass. Their jewels are remarkable for their grand size, beauty, and exquisite craftsmanship.
Details.....The necklace is 38" long, and the pendant measures 5.37" in diameter. The coins measure .90" in diameter. This piece weighs 12 ounces. In Very Good Vintage Condition. Some imperfections are to be expected in vintage and antique jewelry; we consider them a part of the charm.
