This sterling silver Naja necklace is wonderfully feminine; petite and set with blushing pink angel skin coral. In the design of the classic Navajo squash blossom necklace, with eight small Najas in place of the squash blossoms. Two-part construction beads and the Najas are strung on a woven silver chain supporting the traditional large central Naja. The piece is finished with a hook and eye clasp. This is a very light weight and comfortable to wear version of this dramatic type of necklace. Circa 1970.
The Naja symbol is believed to have originated in the Middle East. The Moors brought the horse shoe shaped jewelry with them into Spain as a ward against the evil eye. The Spanish conquistadors introduced the symbol to the Navajo, who integrated it into the dramatic squash blossom design.
Details.....The necklace is 22" long. The large Naja measures 1.53" by 1.67" and the small Najas are 0.73" by 0.75". In Excellent Vintage Condition. You should expect some wear on all vintage and antique jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
