Sculptural Mexican Modernist Earrings Signed Antonio

Fabulous Mexican Modernist earrings from Antonio Pineda. These collectible earrings are large sculptural triangles, crafted in sterling silver. The triangle's sides are angled to create a three-dimensional shadowbox effect. Small shapes, a sphere and a bar, are positioned within the triangle; light and shadow play with the forms. The triangles are suspended from decorative tops: a flat silver triangle folds over the top vertex. These earrings are screw backs, typical of the era. The back of one earring top bears the maker's mark Pineda began using in 1953, the other is marked "925" and with Mexico's Eagle 1 mark. We love Pineda's work, his fascinating designs are always unexpected. Circa 1950.

This piece dates from a high point in silver jewelry design in Mexico. In the 1940s, the Mexican city of Taxco drew jewelry artists from all over the world. The main attraction for designers and studio jewelers was the locally mined materials. Silver and semi-precious gems were abundant and affordable.

Antonio Pineda was born in Taxco in 1919. He apprenticed with William Spratling before opening his workshop in 1939. Pineda's Modernist style was bold and architectural, and his jewelry is amongst the most technically refined ever made in Taxco.
