Imaginative use of color, shape and texture bring whimsical life to this delightful Scottish pebble flower brooch. Petals of pink and white agate, rich autumnal jasper and vibrant bloodstone are set in a fitted silver frame. The glossy petals are carved into concave dished and convex fan-grooved shapes. A faceted bloodstone bud sits at center. This all original brooch is a wonderful example of agate's fascinating variety. This brooch is backed in sterling silver and finished with the pin and c-clasp common to the Victorian era. Circa 1860-70.

Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.

Details.....The brooch measures 1.90" in diameter. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
