A superb Scottish pebble brooch in the form of a tender fern frond. Lobes of colorful agate, bloodstone and jasper are set in a rippling sterling silver frame engraved with delicate details. The sterling frame is substantial, with a closed back and Victorian hinged pin and c-clasp. This fine, all original brooch bears a British Registered Design Mark, or “Kitemark,” that is quite worn but probably indicates the piece was made in 1865.

Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.

Details.....The brooch measures 2.84" by 1.34". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
