This trompe-l'œil umbrella Sottish pebble brooch displays remarkable craftsmanship, creating the illusion of a curvaceous three-dimensional figure. Glossy bloodstone and jasper are cut and polished to resemble remarkably realistic umbrella panels. Sterling silver ribs, tip and handle are exquisitely engraved. Its substantial sterling frame has a closed back, with a Victorian hinged pin and c-clasp. This all original brooch bears a British Registered Design Mark, or “Kitemark,” that tells us its design was registered on April 12, 1865.
Agate is a type of chalcedony that occurs in bands of different colors and translucencies. Scotland produces many of the world's most beautiful agates, so naturally the Scots developed a unique style of "pebble" jewelry featuring cut and polished agates set in silver or occasionally gold. Queen Victoria loved all things Scottish; after she bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, fashionable English ladies sought to emulate her style by making Scottish pebble jewels popular throughout her reign.
Details.....The brooch measures 2.11" by 1.93". In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on antique and vintage jewels, we consider it part of their charm.
