During World War II, Hawaiian motifs influenced fun and romantic fashions. This sassy black Bakelite bangle is a great example of that trend. It is carved with tropical flowers on a crosshatched field. The carving is deep and crisp, covering the entirety of the bracelet. Circa 1940.
Bakelite was the first plastic made from synthetic components. Developed by chemist Leo Baekeland in Yonkers, New York, 1909. Bakelite jewelry became fashionable in the 1920s due to its sleek, modern look and substantial, high-end feel. The wide variety of colors and visual textures made available by Bakelite kept it popular through the 1950s.
Details: The bangle's exterior measures .85" wide and 3.11" in diameter. It has an 8" inner circumference. In Very Good Vintage Condition. You should always expect some wear on your antique and vintage jewels; we consider it part of their charm.
