Victorian Silver Fibula Brooch

A Victorian silver brooch in the Archeological style. The piece is similar to a Roman fibula or a Celtic penannular brooch. A crescent of filigreed rosettes sits atop a long, sharp pin. An open ring swivels around the crescent's base. This style of brooch would have fastened a tartan, shawl, or cloak. Circa 1880.

Penannular brooches, also known as the Celtic brooches, are types of brooch most closely associated with the beginning of the Early Medieval period in the British Isles. A penannular brooch features a long pin attached by its head to an open ring with terminals; the pin can move freely around the ring as far as the terminals will allow.
