A Victorian strand of black English moulded glass beads. These graduated beads have a lovely dark glossy sparkle. The necklace is hand knotted on black silk with a modern gold filled C-clasp. Circa 1890.

Queen Victoria was in mourning for her husband for decades, and mourning required the wearing of black clothing and jewelry. The Queen was the primary arbiter of fashion, therefore mourning attire became fashionable at Court and in society in general. Jet, a material naturally black in color, was in high demand as were other black materials such as onyx, bog oak, black glass, vulcanite, etc.

Details.....The necklace measures 24.5" long. The graduated beads measure from 6.9mm to 12.2mm. In Very Good Antique Condition. You should always expect some wear on vintage and antique jewels, we consider it a part of their charm.
